SUN Bucks Program

The SUN Bucks program is run by the California Department of Social Services (CDSS). SUN Bucks help families buy food during the summer when schools are not in session. Eligible children will receive $120 SUN Bucks benefits if they qualify for free or reduced-price school meals through the Universal Benefits Application.

SUN Bucks cards are accepted at locations where CalFresh EBT cards are accepted. Getting SUN Bucks does not affect your family’s immigration status.

You do not need to apply if any of the following apply to you: 

• Your child receives CalFresh, CalWorks, or Medi-Cal (certified at or below 185% of the Federal Poverty Level).
• You have children in foster care.
• Your child is experiencing homelessness and/or is considered a runaway. 

Children who are not eligible based on the qualifications may be eligible through the Universal Benefits Application.

Parent/guardian may apply at any MCSD school to see if their child(ren) qualifies based on household size and income. The application must be received at any MCSD school by September 2, 2025. 

To receive benefits for the summer of 2025 AND 2026, applications must be received in-person by September 2, 2025. After September 2, 2025, benefits will be available only for the summer of 2026.

California Summer EBT

• SUN Bucks expire 122 days after being loaded on the card. Families are encouraged to spend their SUN Bucks before CalFresh benefits. 
• It is important that we have your current address. The card will be sent to this address. 
• Report any SUN Bucks card issues to the SUN Bucks Helpline at (877) 328-9677.
• A family cannot get more than one SUN Bucks card per child, or get SUN Bucks from more than one state.

SUN Bucks provides a summer food benefit to eligible children, while the Confidential Household Income Surveys collect data on household income to assess poverty levels for various programs and funding.
